UNCOVERING NORTHERN WELLBEING: Finland is the Happiest Country in the World

*edited in 2023 - once again Finland was ranked World’s Happiest county in 2023 - the sixth year in a row Finland is the winner!

For the sixth year in a row, Finland is the world’s happiest country, according to World Happiness Report rankings based largely on life evaluations from the Gallup World Poll.

The Nordic country and its neighbors Denmark, Iceland, Sweden and Norway all score very well on the measures the report uses to explain its findings: healthy life expectancy, GDP per capita, social support, low corruption, generosity in a community where people look after each other and freedom to make key life decisions.

Taking a holistic view of the well-being of all the components of a society and its members makes for better life evaluations and happier countries.

“The objective of every institution should be to contribute what it can to human well-being,” the report says, which includes accounting for future generations and preserving basic human rights.

*edited in 2022 - once again Finland was ranked World’s Happiest county in 2022 - the fifth year in a row Finland is the winner!

World Happiness Report 2021 has been published and we are so happy to see Finland ranked again as World’s Happiest county in 2021 by the latest report. This is in fact the fourth year in a row Finland is the winner!

Four other Nordic countries are also on the top of the list. According to the report, Scandinavian countries are the best for living (the Nordic countries have been dominating the top spots in this report for all of the nine years it has been published).

As 2020 was a very different year, World Happiness Report 2021 Looks at Relationship Between Well-Being and COVID-19: The report's authors said this year's survey examined the effects of the crisis on the structure and quality of people's lives as well as looked at how governments dealt with it.

The annual report, produced by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, ranks 149 countries based on gross domestic product per person, healthy life expectancy and the opinions of residents.

The survey asked participants to indicate on a 1-10 scale how much social support they feel they have if something goes wrong, their freedom to make their own life choices, their sense of how corrupt their society is and how generous they are.

"What we have found is that when people take the long view, they’ve shown a lot of resilience in this past year," Columbia University economist Jeffrey Sachs, one of the report’s co-author, said from New York.

"We find year after year that life satisfaction is reported to be happiest in the social democracies of northern Europe. People feel secure in those countries, so trust is high. The government is seen to be credible and honest, and trust in each other is high," Sachs said.

Finland took rapid and extensive measures to stop the spread of the virus. It has reported one of Europe’s lowest COVID-19 mortality rates.

"In Finland as well, of course, people have been suffering," Anu Partanen, author of 'The Nordic Theory of Everything' said on Friday in Helsinki. "But again in Finland and the Nordic countries, people are really lucky because society still supports a system buffering these sorts of shocks."
